I've written many applications in VC6 ( very few in VB6 as i was a C programmer ), but i used VB/VC# as soon as the VS 2003 has been available. SQL Server 2005 Express is greedier ( in term of RAM ) than MSDE, but you have not the same limitations ( except the story of load governor which has disappeared with MSDE SP2 ) - you should have a look on this link which is speaking about the needs of memory for some operations - if you can, try to change the driver with which your application is gaining access to your Sql Server Express ( see the 1st link ) - i'm not sure that an application in VB6 is a good thing.
